What it is
Nubuck is made from the top layer of the hide, sanded on the grain side to raise a short nap. It looks like fine suede but comes from the stronger outer layer.
How it behaves
It is more durable than most suede and feels smooth and matte. The surface still marks and stains, so it often needs protective treatment.

About Nubuck
Nubuck is top grain leather that has been lightly buffed on the grain side to create a fine, velvety nap. It looks like suede but is made from the stronger outer layer of the hide, so it is generally tougher and more durable.
It gives a soft, matte, premium look, and it is popular in boots, shoes and jackets.

How it looks and feels
Nubuck has a short, even nap and a soft hand. It shows a visible shade change when brushed, which is characteristic of the material and part of its appeal. Colour is often rich and slightly muted.
Because the surface is open, it is more vulnerable to water, oil and dirt than finished grain leather. It marks easily, and pale colours show wear quickly.

Where it works and where it does not
Nubuck works well for boots, casual shoes, jackets and bags that are cared for. It is a poor choice for gear used in wet conditions or by customers who will not maintain it.
Care guidance is part of the product. A nubuck brush, a protective treatment and gentle cleaning keep it looking good. Describe these on the label or care card.
- Softer and more refined than split suede
- Needs care to keep the nap looking clean

Questions buyers ask
What is the difference between nubuck and suede?
Nubuck is buffed from the grain side and is usually stronger. Suede typically comes from the flesh side or a split.
Does it stain easily?
It can. Protective treatment helps but does not make it stain proof.
Can it be dyed to any colour?
Colour options depend on the leather and dye house and are confirmed at quotation.
