Raw Denim

Denim left unwashed after dyeing, kept dark and stiff so it fades from wear.

What it is

Raw, or dry, denim has not been washed or heavily processed after weaving and dyeing. It keeps its full indigo and its sizing, which is why it feels stiff and looks uniformly dark when new.

How it behaves

It fades gradually along wear lines, so each pair develops its own pattern. Because it is unwashed, it can shrink and can transfer dye onto light surfaces until it settles.

About Raw Denim

Raw denim, also called dry denim, is denim that has not been washed after dyeing and weaving. It keeps its full indigo, which is why it is deep in colour and crisp to handle.

Brands choose raw denim for its story. The wearer's habits shape the fades, so each pair ends up personal, and that appeals to a specific, informed customer.

How it looks and feels

Raw denim is stiff, dark and slightly rough when new. It softens as it is worn. Because unwashed indigo can rub off, light colours and upholstery may pick up some blue early on.

Shrinkage is a real factor. Unsanforised raw denim can shrink noticeably on first wash, while sanforised raw denim has been pre-shrunk at the mill and is more predictable.

Care and ageing

Many raw denim owners wear the garment for a long time before the first wash, and fades develop from creasing and friction. Others soak it early to set the size. Neither is wrong, so give customers clear guidance.

For production, the main decision is whether to supply sanforised or unsanforised cloth. Hang tags and care labels should explain the dye transfer, the break-in period and the shrinkage behaviour honestly.

  • Expect dye transfer in early wear
  • State clearly whether the fabric is sanforised

Questions buyers ask

Is raw denim comfortable?

It is stiff at first and softens with wear. It is not the easiest choice for customers who want instant softness.

Does raw denim shrink?

It can, especially if unsanforised. Sanforised cloth shrinks much less. We confirm fabric options at quotation.

Can a brand sell raw denim and washed denim together?

Yes. Many ranges pair a raw core style with washed versions of the same cut.
