Rigid Denim

Denim with no stretch fibre. Stiff when new, it moulds to the wearer and fades with use.

What it is

Rigid denim is woven from cotton yarn alone, with no elastane added. It is the traditional form of denim and the base for raw, selvedge and heavyweight styles.

How it behaves

It feels firm and structured when new, then softens and takes on the shape of the wearer over time. It can shrink on first wash unless it has been pre-shrunk, and it tends to fade along creases and wear points.

About Rigid Denim

Rigid denim is woven from 100 percent cotton with no elastane in the yarn. It has very little give, so the garment holds the shape it is cut and sewn into. This is the traditional jean fabric and still the reference point for how denim should feel and age.

For private-label brands, rigid denim suits collections built on structure, a firm hand and visible wear over time. It is also the simplest construction to specify, since there is no stretch percentage to balance against recovery.

How it looks and feels

New rigid denim feels dense and a little stiff, and it softens with wear and washing. The weave shows a clear twill line and a surface that takes fades well, particularly at the knees, thighs and pocket edges.

Because the fabric does not stretch, fit comes entirely from the pattern. Waist, seat and thigh measurements need more care than they do with stretch cloth, and a sample is the right place to check them.

Where it works and where it does not

Rigid denim is a strong choice for workwear, heritage styling, jackets and straight or relaxed jeans. It is a poorer match for skinny cuts or any style where the wearer expects to move freely straight from the hanger.

Expect some shrinkage and a break-in period. Washing instructions and any pre-wash treatment should be agreed before bulk, so the finished size matches the approved sample.

  • Best for structure, durability and strong fades

Questions buyers ask

Is rigid denim the same as raw denim?

Not exactly. Rigid describes a fabric with no stretch. Raw describes denim that has not been washed after dyeing. A fabric can be both, or rigid and washed.

Can I get rigid denim in different weights?

Rigid construction is available across light, mid and heavy weight classes. Specific options are confirmed at quotation.

Will the fit change after washing?

Rigid cotton denim can shrink and relax with washing. We recommend approving a washed paid sample before bulk so the final fit is agreed.
