Material

Chambray

A light plain-weave cotton that looks like denim but is softer and thinner.

What it is

Chambray uses a coloured warp, often blue, and a white weft in a plain weave. Denim uses a twill weave, which is why chambray is lighter, smoother and less textured.

How it behaves

It is soft, breathable and easy to wash, with a mottled blue look. It creases more readily than twill denim and is not built for heavy abrasion.

About Chambray

Chambray looks like denim but is a different weave. It uses a plain weave with a coloured warp and a white weft, giving a soft, lightweight cloth with a fine, slightly flecked look. Denim uses a twill weave, which is heavier and more diagonal.

Brands use chambray to offer the denim look in shirts and dresses without the weight and stiffness of true denim.

How it looks and feels

Chambray is light, breathable and soft against the skin. It has a gentle, even blue appearance rather than the strong twill lines of denim. It drapes well and is comfortable in warm weather.

It is less rugged than denim. Chambray wrinkles easily, wears out sooner under hard use and does not fade with the dramatic contrast of heavier indigo cloth.

Where it works and where it does not

Chambray is ideal for shirts, shirt dresses, light jackets and summer trousers. It is not the answer for jeans or workwear that must take abuse.

Because it is a lighter, finer cloth, collar and cuff construction, interfacing and pressing carry more weight in the final look. Check these on the sample.

  • Good for comfort, drape and layering
  • Not a substitute for heavy denim durability

Questions buyers ask

Is chambray the same as lightweight denim?

No. Chambray is a plain weave, while denim is a twill. They can look similar from a distance.

Does chambray shrink?

Cotton chambray can shrink with washing. We recommend approving a washed sample before bulk.

Can I get it in colours other than blue?

Options depend on the fabric source and are confirmed at quotation.
