Cowhide

Thick, durable leather from cattle, used across bags, belts, jackets and wallets.

What it is

Cowhide is the most widely used leather. It is larger and thicker than sheepskin or goatskin, and can be finished as anything from a firm belt leather to a supple garment leather.

How it behaves

It is strong and abrasion resistant, and the finish decides how it looks and feels. Thickness can be split down to suit the product.

About Cowhide

Cowhide is the most widely used leather. Hides are large, strong and relatively consistent, so they work across clothing, bags, footwear and accessories. Cattle are a by-product of the meat industry, which is why cowhide is plentiful.

It is the workhorse of the leather trade, and many other terms, such as full grain or top grain, describe how a cowhide is processed.

How it looks and feels

Cowhide is thick, strong and durable, with a firm hand that can be softened by tanning and finishing. Large hides allow big panels, so fewer seams are needed than with sheep or goat skins.

Thickness and softness vary by hide, cut and finish. A heavy cowhide jacket feels very different from a soft, thin cow leather bag, so be specific.

Where it works and where it does not

Cowhide suits heavy jackets, belts, bags, footwear and any product that has to survive daily use. It is heavier than lamb or goat, so it is not ideal for light, fluid garments.

Hides carry natural marks, and different parts of the hide differ in thickness and grain. Quality depends on tannery selection and grading, so agree acceptable grades and surface marks at sample stage.

Questions buyers ask

Is cowhide the same as full grain leather?

No. Cowhide is the source. Full grain is how the surface layer is processed.

Is it hard to wear in?

Thicker cowhide needs break-in. Softer finishes and thinner cuts feel comfortable sooner.

Can I mix cowhide with other materials?

Yes, for example with textile linings or hardware. Specifications are agreed at sample stage.
