What it is
Selvedge, or self-edge, denim is woven so the fabric edge is finished as it is made and does not fray. This is traditionally done on shuttle looms, which produce narrower fabric than modern wide looms.
How it behaves
The finished edge is often shown as a coloured line on the outseam when the leg is cuffed. Selvedge describes how the edge is made. It says nothing on its own about weight, quality or finish.

About Selvedge Denim
Selvedge denim is woven on traditional shuttle looms, which produce a finished self-edge so the fabric does not fray at the sides. The edge is often marked with a coloured line, and designers show it by cuffing the hem.
It is a premium construction and a recognised signal of craft. For a brand, it is a feature customers can see, understand and talk about.

How it looks and feels
Because shuttle looms are slower and produce narrower cloth than modern projectile looms, selvedge fabric tends to have a denser, slightly irregular character. Slubs and variation in the yarn give depth when it fades.
The self-edge runs along the outer leg seam of the garment. Pattern cutting must account for the narrower cloth width, which affects how many pieces fit on a roll.

Where it works and where it does not
Selvedge suits straight, tapered and heritage fits where the edge can show on a cuff. It is a poor use of money on styles that hide the seam, or for customers who do not know what selvedge is.
Not every denim marked selvedge is high quality, and not every high quality denim is selvedge. Judge the fabric by weight, hand and finish, and confirm available options at quotation.
